The rules of digital security are changing fast. What worked for decades is being rewritten by AI.

Here's how to stay ahead.

The Playbook

Future-proof your security in the AI age:

Minimize your attack surface

Stop feeding big tech your data

Switch to decentralized storage

Run personal open-source or AI built systems

Small Targets

For decades, Macs and Linux machines barely needed antivirus. They were too small of targets to be worth the effort. The same principle applies today, but the game has shifted.

Bespoke Systems

With AI today, you can build bespoke personal systems tailored exactly to you. The more unique your setup, the smaller your attack surface. This matters more than ever when you're keeping your systems secure against evolving threats.

Obscurity Returns

Security through obscurity is real protection again. When attackers rely on common patterns and mass-produced exploits, your custom setup becomes a shield. And understanding the hidden risks of AI content is part of building that awareness.

Take Action

The bottom line? Minimize your attack surface, stop handing your data to big tech, embrace decentralized storage, and run personal systems built with open-source tools or AI.

The security landscape has flipped. What was once impractical for individuals is now accessible. Your unique setup is your advantage.

Save this. Your future self will thank you.

How Claude Code Fixed Our Fragile Phone System

We had a problem. A complex, fragile phone system that the team was too scared to document or change. You know the type. The kind of system everyone tiptoes around because nobody wants to be the one who breaks it.

The Solution

Claude Code.

I told Claude there was an API and it bypassed the manual headache entirely. It built a dynamic call scheduler just by describing the logic. Here's the thing: it didn't just write the functions. It understood the system architecture better than we did.

That's the part that caught me off guard. We'd been avoiding this system for so long, and an AI tool came in and made sense of it faster than our own team could. Of course, we can't blindly trust AI responses, so we reviewed everything carefully. But the foundation it built was solid.

Key Takeaways

Sometimes the systems we're most afraid to touch are exactly the ones that need attention. And sometimes the right tool can cut through years of accumulated complexity in a single conversation.

If you've got legacy systems gathering dust because nobody wants to risk breaking them, consider whether AI-assisted development might help you finally revisit those industry rules you've been avoiding.

Don't let fear of the unknown keep your infrastructure stuck in the past.

Why Small Businesses Can Finally Compete Again

Right now, an auto mechanic and a freelance graphic designer use the same accounting software. A physical therapist and a restaurant owner use the same scheduling tool. These are completely different businesses with completely different needs, but they're all stuck with the same generic products because until recently, that was the only option.

That's starting to change. AI has made it dramatically cheaper to build software, which means people with real industry experience can now create tools designed for their specific field. At the same time, customers are getting tired of one-size-fits-all solutions and looking for something better. Put those two things together, and I think we're heading back toward a world of smaller, more specialized businesses — and away from the big generalist companies that have dominated for the past few decades.

Generic to Niche

If you look at something like accounting software, almost every business uses a generic version like QuickBooks or Xero. This software works okay for everyone but isn't optimized for anyone specific.

In the past, companies had to address the most people possible because the cost of developing software was so high, often hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars. They built everything for the mass market because that was the only way to remain profitable.

But think about what this actually meant: an auto mechanic and a freelance graphic designer use the same accounting tool, even though they have completely different needs:

Different types of expenses to track

Different tax considerations

Entirely different cash flow patterns

The software doesn't fail them, but it doesn't truly serve them either.

The AI Edge

Now that people can use AI to handle repetitive coding, data processing, and even initial product design, development costs have collapsed. Someone with ten years of experience as an auto mechanic can now build accounting software specifically for that industry. Software that automatically categorizes parts inventory, tracks warranty work differently than regular repairs, and integrates with the specific supply chain tools mechanics actually use.

I've written more about this in WordPress Website Speed Optimization Guide.

You don't need hundreds of thousands of dollars to build something anymore. Do the simple math on a specialized tool: charge $99 a month, get 500 paying customers, and you're making about $600,000 a year. That's enough to pay a small team, keep improving the product, and run a real business. In the old model, you needed 50,000 users at a lower price just to cover what you spent building the thing. That changes everything about what kinds of businesses can work.

Now, finding those 500 customers is still hard. You're going up against tools with big brand names, tons of built-in features, and large sales teams. But 500 people in one specific industry who feel ignored by the big players? That's a group you can find if you know the space. You're not buying TV ads. You're showing up in the online groups, trade shows, and communities where your people already hang out.

Trusting Local

People are backing this up with how they spend their money. Trust in big companies has been dropping for years. You can see it everywhere. Writers are leaving major publications for Substack. Small online stores on Shopify are pulling customers away from Amazon. Tight-knit online communities are replacing giant, generic forums. Over and over, people are picking smaller and more focused over bigger and more convenient.

It makes sense. If you're a physical therapist looking for software to run your practice, who do you want to call for help? A support team that handles questions from thirty different industries? Or someone who actually understands how insurance billing works for outpatient rehab?

The problem has always been that small, specialized teams couldn't keep up. But AI changes that. A two-person team can now handle customer emails, create content, and crunch data at a level that used to take five or six people. That means the costs finally work for a business with a smaller, more focused customer base.

What This Means for You

Lower costs and shifting trust are pushing the market away from a handful of giants controlling everything. The "winner-take-all" era that defined the last few decades is losing its grip.

If you know a specific industry well — plumbing, physical therapy, restaurant management, commercial real estate — you can now build tools and services that used to be too expensive to even try. The thing holding you back isn't money anymore. It's whether you can spot a real problem and build something clearly better than what's already out there.

So here's what I'd actually tell you to do: think about the one thing in your industry's current tools that drives everyone nuts. The clunky workaround that people just live with because "that's how the software works." That frustration is your opening. The technology to fix it is cheaper than it's ever been. The people who need it are already out there looking. The only question is whether you're going to build it, or wait for someone else to.

I cleaned another WordPress site this morning. It is one of my least favorite things to do, but I'm getting pretty good at it. I've been fixing sites that others have trouble with, and today's cleanup reminded me just how important basic maintenance really is.

The Problem

This site I was trying to fix had multiple plugins that were years out of date with known vulnerabilities. When plugins aren't updated regularly, they become easy targets for security issues. It's a common problem I see far too often when I'm cleaning up compromised sites.

Prevention Matters

Remember that regularly updating your plugins should be part of your site maintenance. This simple step can save you from the headache of dealing with a hacked or broken site. Keeping everything current is one of the most effective ways to protect your online home.

Site maintenance goes beyond security—it also affects performance. I cover the full picture in my WordPress Website Speed Optimization Guide.

Conclusion

The key takeaway is simple: regular plugin updates are essential for WordPress security. Outdated plugins with known vulnerabilities put your entire site at risk.

Don't wait until you have a problem to address your site maintenance. Staying on top of updates now prevents costly cleanups later.

#ez-toc-container, .ez-toc-container, div.ez-toc-v2_0_17 { display: none !important; }

Today marks a new beginning. I was responding to a client email this morning and the AI auto suggestion was exactly how I would have responded to the email.

The Shift

Normally I delete out the auto suggestions. But today I just clicked send because it covered everything I would have. This is a notable moment in how we work with technology.

Trust Factor

There is a balance to find here. While this instance worked perfectly, it is worth remembering why we can't blindly trust AI responses in every situation. The key is knowing when the suggestion truly matches your voice and intent.

Moving Forward

AI tools are getting better at understanding how we communicate. When the auto suggestion matches exactly what you would have written, it saves time without sacrificing authenticity.

The goal is not to let AI replace your thinking. It is to recognize when it genuinely captures your voice and use that to work more efficiently.

Pay attention to when AI gets it right and when it misses the mark. That awareness will help you use these tools wisely.

This is a reminder and for those who do not know: if you copy and paste out of an AI tool, there is most likely hidden characters in the text which acts as code to tell you've copied it from AI.

This is something many people aren't aware of when they use AI writing tools. The text you see on your screen isn't always the complete picture of what you're actually copying.

The Invisible Code

These invisible characters are embedded in the text as a kind of watermark.

They act as code to tell you've copied it from AI, even though you can't see them with the naked eye.

Website Security Issues

These invisible characters can also sometimes trigger security on your website. If you are having trouble saving your post, that is a good possibility.

The hidden code can conflict with your content management system or website security protocols, preventing you from publishing or saving your work properly.

Key Takeaways

If you're using AI tools to create content, be aware that copy-pasting directly can come with hidden consequences.

These watermarks are designed to indicate AI-generated content, but they can also create technical problems when you try to save or publish your posts.

Before you copy and paste from AI tools, consider pasting into a plain text editor first to strip out any hidden formatting or characters that might cause issues down the line.

How AI Search Is Bringing Back Old-School Branding

Everyone is talking about how AI will change search, but most of the focus is on the technical side of things. As someone who works with local businesses and marketing every day, I see a different shift happening. I believe AI is going to push us back toward a more fundamental concept: old-school branding.

In this article, I’ll explore how our obsession with tracking and attribution has shaped modern marketing, why brand awareness is about to matter more than ever, and how AI will reward businesses that people actually know and trust by name.

The Attribution Trap

For the last 10 to 15 years, digital marketing has been obsessed with attribution.

We’ve wanted to track everything:

The first Facebook ad click

The landing page visit

The final purchase

A clear return on investment (ROI) for every dollar spent

If we can’t track it, we often don’t value it. This mindset has made us incredibly focused on direct, measurable actions.

Remember Billboards?

Before we could track every click, marketing was different. Think of old-school branding, like a billboard on the side of the road. A company would put their ad up, and there was no real way to track how many people saw it and then went to the store.

The goal wasn’t direct attribution. It was awareness. The ad might not even talk directly about what the business does. It might just be something clever to get attention with the brand’s logo on it. The point was to get the brand name into people’s minds.

AI Connects the Dots

This is where AI changes the game. AI is going to look at what people are searching for. If five different people in a local area specifically search for “Joe’s Plumbing,” the AI learns that Joe’s Plumbing is a known and trusted brand for that service. It’s picking up on brand recognition that was built through that “untrackable” old-school awareness.

When the sixth person comes along and asks a generic question like, “I need a plumber near me,” what will the AI do? Instead of just giving a list of ten blue links, it’s going to use the information it gathered. It will likely recommend Joe’s Plumbing because it has learned that people in that area trust that brand.

The untrackable has suddenly become a powerful signal.

Real Human Connections

Ultimately, I think AI will push people toward wanting real connections. They are going to want to do business with people and local companies they trust, not just faceless corporations. Building a strong personal brand or a trusted local brand creates that connection.

It’s what makes someone search for your business by name instead of just searching for the service you provide. That’s the key to standing out in the new era of AI search.

This trust dynamic extends to how we interact with AI tools themselves. I explore this more in Why We Can't Blindly Trust AI Responses.

Conclusion

While modern, data-driven marketing will always have its place, the rise of AI search means we can’t afford to ignore the power of brand awareness. The businesses that will succeed are the ones that people know, remember, and ask for by name. It’s a return to the fundamentals of building trust and recognition in your community.

This shift means focusing on creating a brand that resonates with people on a human level. It’s about more than just keywords and conversion tracking. It’s about becoming the go-to name in your field so that when people need help, your brand is the first one that comes to mind.

This is the future of local business marketing, and it’s a big part of what I’m focusing on.

The longer I work in any industry, the clearer one truth becomes: most of what we obsess over does not actually matter.

We follow rules without questioning them.

We maintain processes because "that is how it has always been done."

But when you dig deeper, you start to see the cracks in the foundation.

Industry Habits

So much of what people do in an industry is done simply because that is how it has always been done.

There is no strategic reason.

No data backing it up.

Just tradition masquerading as best practice.

Obscure Scenarios

Other times, rules were created for one obscure scenario that rarely happens.

Yet everyone follows them religiously, even when that scenario does not apply to their situation.

We waste time and resources solving problems that do not exist.

Outdated Rules

Periodically, it is even because it used to have to be done that way, but something has changed since the rule was started, and it is no longer necessary.

Technology evolves.

Markets shift.

Customer needs transform.

But the old rules stick around like ghosts haunting our workflows.

Where Disruption Begins

This is where industry disruption comes in.

Someone finally asks, "Why?" and realizes there is no good answer.

They strip away the unnecessary and build something better.

Recalibrating Priorities

It is useful to recalibrate sometimes and remember that many of the things you thought mattered do not actually matter.

Step back from your daily routine.

Question your assumptions.

You might be surprised by how much dead weight you are carrying.

Conclusion

The things we assume are essential often turn out to be optional.

True progress comes from questioning inherited wisdom and eliminating what no longer serves a purpose.

Free yourself from outdated rules and focus on what actually moves the needle.

I am amazed all the time at how big businesses have such terrible websites.

The Problem

I got a bill from a hospital recently and noticed something alarming.

The URL to make the payment included a bunch of gibberish instead of being a clean URL like payments.domain.com.

If I did not know better, I would have thought it was a phishing site.

Making Things Worse

Then, when clicking the button to create an account, it just goes to a blank white page.

Nothing happens.

No error message, no redirect, just white space.

Finding Workarounds

Their main website, separate from this payment portal, had a link to make a payment without an account.

So I was able to get it paid.

But I do not think most people would investigate as far as I did.

Conclusion

Big businesses often have websites that look more suspicious than legitimate, creating unnecessary barriers for customers trying to complete simple tasks.

I've been working with WordPress and building websites for clients since 2007. In that time, I've seen a lot of changes, but one thing has become more critical than ever: website speed.

It might seem like a purely technical detail, but it's not. Your site's loading time is a massive factor in your user's experience. A slow site can silently kill your business by driving away potential customers before they even see what you have to offer.

In this article, I'll walk you through why slow websites are bad and my updated step-by-step guide to get your site running faster.

Slow Websites Are Bad

A slow website has real consequences for your business and your search rankings.

I've covered this topic in detail in my article about why website speed kills, but here's the quick version: slow sites hurt your search rankings, test customer patience, damage mobile experience, and directly reduce conversion rates.

Now let's get into the practical steps you can take to fix these issues.

My Process for Speed

When I analyze a site, I follow a specific process to identify and fix speed issues. Here's a breakdown you can follow.

Analyze Your Site

The first thing I do is run the site through analysis tools.

You'll want to bookmark these:

gtmetrix.com

webpagetest.org

pagespeed.web.dev

debugbear.com

These tools will report on your "Core Web Vitals," which are the key metrics to focus on.

Understand the Vitals

There are three main vitals I look at:

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): This is the time it takes for the largest element above the fold to load. If you have a big hero image or banner, this is usually it.

Total Blocking Time (TBT): This is usually caused by CSS or JavaScript that keeps something else from loading until it is finished. To fix this, I use the waterfall view in WebPageTest to find items that are render-blocking and then try to remove or delay them.

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): This happens when you go to a page and things move around while it's loading. To find out what's moving, I use the Core Web Vitals test at WebPageTest and click on the CLS number in the report. It will highlight exactly which items on the page are shifting. Once you know, you can do things to stop it, like setting a static height for the div that contains a slow-loading image.

Check the Waterfall

To reduce loading times, I go to the waterfall tab in GTmetrix and sort by file size. The goal here is to remove or reduce the size of the top items.

I really do not like seeing anything larger than 150kb, but sometimes you can't get around it. The culprit I see on most sites is usually image size.

Optimize Your Images

This brings me to the most common problem. If you have a big backlog of unoptimized images, a service like Shortpixel on an unlimited plan can be a lifesaver.

Using it won't be the absolute best solution, but it's much better than redoing all of your images manually. For new images, you can see my article on using Squoosh here.

Use the Right Plugins

My first step on an unoptimized site is to use an optimization plugin like Perfmatters. Using the settings in these types of plugins can usually knock out 90% of the problems.

A word of caution: read about the settings and understand what they do. Don't just apply them all.

I also put a site on Cloudflare and make sure to connect the Cloudflare plugin with the API. If you don't, Cloudflare won't update site changes when you make them.

And if you're on Ezoic? You need to use Leap, but your long-term goal should be to get off Ezoic.

Of course, speed is not the only maintenance concern. Outdated plugins also create security risks, which I discuss in Keeping WordPress Sites Secure.

Test on Desktop and Mobile

Finally, always check your site on both desktop and mobile. Make sure everything still looks right and is loading properly.

If your mobile menu doesn't work after making changes, it is probably a JavaScript file. Find the related JS file in the waterfall and add it to the exclusion section of "defer Javascript" in Perfmatters.

Conclusion

In the end, website speed touches every part of your online presence. It affects your user experience, your Google rankings, and ultimately, your bottom line. A fast, responsive website is a sign of professionalism and respect for your customer's time

Today’s AWS outage revealed a critical lesson about modern business infrastructure that I need to share. Even if you think you are not directly connected to certain tech services, the reality might surprise you.

Hidden Connections

Your business might not use AWS directly.

But that is not the whole story.

The real challenge lies in understanding your vendors’ dependencies.

Real-World Impact

Let me give you a concrete example.

Think about companies using Microsoft 365 for their email.

Today, many couldn’t receive their messages.

Why? Because their email security software depends on AWS.

When AWS went down, the entire email chain broke.

Conclusion

Understanding your complete digital supply chain is not just about knowing your direct service providers. It is about understanding the entire ecosystem your business relies on, including your vendors’ dependencies.

After seeing Anthropic's recent post about how easily language models can be poisoned with just a few documents, I couldn't help but draw parallels to what we have observed in SEO over the past few years. This revelation highlights some important lessons about AI and content quality.

The Google Parallel

I have watched as Google's algorithms sometimes ranked subpar or inaccurate content for many keywords. The reason? Their model encountered numerous rewritten versions of the same content, leading it to assume this information must be correct.

The Copy-Paste Problem

The root of the issue was simple: bloggers were using keyword tools and essentially copying each other's work. This created a cycle of repeated information, regardless of its accuracy or quality.

Best Practices

Here is my key advice when working with AI:

Treat AI responses as data points, not final decisions

Add your own critical thinking layer

Focus on creating the best possible outcome through human oversight

Conclusion

The lesson is clear: while AI tools are powerful, they are not infallible. The best results come from combining AI insights with human judgment and expertise.

Guess what: your website speed affects everything.

When your site loads slowly, it impacts your search rankings, customer patience, mobile experience, and conversion rates.

Keep reading below to understand how each of these areas gets hurt by slow loading times and why speed should be your top concern.

Search Rankings

Website speed is a major ranking factor for search engines. Google prioritizes fast-loading sites in search results.

When your site loads slowly, you’re essentially telling search engines that user experience isn’t important to you. This pushes you down in rankings and makes it harder for potential customers to find you.

Customer Patience

Today’s users expect instant results.

A slow website tests customer patience in ways that can cost you business. People won’t wait around for your content to load when they have countless other options just a click away.

Every second of delay increases the chance they’ll leave and never come back.

Mobile Experience

Mobile users are especially sensitive to speed issues. They’re often on slower connections and expect sites to work smoothly on their devices.

A slow mobile experience doesn’t just frustrate users. It tells them your business doesn’t care about their needs, which damages trust and credibility.

Conversion Rates

Speed directly impacts your bottom line through conversion rates.

The faster your site loads, the more likely visitors are to complete purchases, sign up for newsletters, or take whatever action you want them to take.

Even small improvements in speed can lead to significant increases in conversions.

Ready to tackle these speed issues? Check out my step-by-step speed optimization guide for the exact process I use.

Conclusion

Website speed isn’t just a technical metric. It’s a business priority that affects every aspect of your online presence.

From search rankings to customer satisfaction, mobile experience to actual sales, speed determines success. Remember to focus on real-world performance, not just theoretical scores from testing tools.

The faster your site, the better your business performs. Start prioritizing speed today and watch your results improve across the board.

One of the biggest culprits I see for slow websites is image size.

Large, unoptimized images can drag your site's performance down, hurting your user experience and your Google rankings.

In this article, I'm going to show you how to optimize an image for your website using my favorite free tool. This is the exact process I use, and it's incredibly simple.

Get Squooshing

First, you’ll want to go to the website squoosh.app.

Once you're there, you can either drag and drop an image directly onto the page or click in the center to open your file explorer and select the image you want to work on.

Compress First

Once your image is loaded, you'll see a split screen with the original on the left and the compressed version on the right.

In the bottom right corner, there's an "Edit" panel. The first thing to do is select the compression type. I like to pick MozJPEG. It does a great job of reducing file size while keeping the quality high.

The best part is, Squoosh will remember this setting for the next time you use it.

Resize Smartly

Next, toggle on the "Resize" option. You'll probably notice that your original image is huge—maybe over 4,000 pixels wide. That is way bigger than you'll ever need for your website.

So, what size should you use?

A safe bet: If you aren't sure, setting the width to 1200 pixels is generally a good starting point.

For Google Discover: If you're in a niche that gets traffic from Google Discover, you'll want to make sure your featured images are set to 1200 pixels wide.

Find Your Width

If you want to be more precise, you can find the exact width you need.

Go to your website and figure out where the image will be placed. Then, you can use your browser's inspect tool to find the dimensions.

Here's a quick guide:

Right-click on the area and select "Inspect."

In the developer panel that opens, click the little icon in the top-left that looks like a cursor in a box.

Hover over the column or section where your image will go. A little box will pop up showing you the exact dimensions of that area.

For example, if the area is 687 pixels wide, you know you don't need an image any larger than that. You can then go back to Squoosh and enter that exact width.

You'll be amazed at the size reduction—I’ve seen this simple step reduce an image's file size by 99%!

Download & Rename

Once you're happy with the compression and size, just hit the download button in the bottom right corner.

The final step is to rename the file before you upload it to your website. Instead of a generic name like "IMG_1234.jpg," give it a descriptive name that tells Google what the photo is about, like "photo-at-the-beach.jpg."

Full Tutorial

If you're more of a visual learner, I’ve recorded a full walkthrough of this entire process.

You can watch the video below to see exactly how I use Squoosh to optimize images from start to finish. Or click here to watch it on YouTube.

Conclusion

And that's it. In just a few simple steps, you've taken a massive image file and turned it into a small, web-ready version that will load quickly for your visitors. This process of compressing, resizing, and renaming is a fundamental part of maintaining a fast, user-friendly website.

Making this a regular habit for every image you upload will prevent your site from getting bogged down over time. It’s one of the easiest and most impactful things you can do to improve performance.

Title Option 1: Same Beats Different

Title Option 2: The Data Problem

Title Option 3: Why Everything Looks Identical

People think AI is removing creativity and that everything is the same.

But even before AI was publicly available we had data.

Data shows how to be rewarded.

You can see top performing posts and if you mimicked them you would get some portion of the success.

People would rather have that win than trying something original and potentially not getting any results.

The Reality

Same is rewarded more often than different.

This is not an AI problem.

This is a human nature problem combined with how platforms reward content.

When you can see what works and copy it for guaranteed results, most people will choose that path over risking an original idea that might fail.

Conclusion

The sameness we see in content is not caused by AI. It is caused by our access to data showing what gets rewarded, and our natural preference for proven wins over uncertain experiments.
